Bollywood wears a pall of gloom on July 18, 2012, with the passing of its veteran super actor Rajesh Khanna. India's cine industry truly becomes poor with the loss of this man at an early age of 69 in Mumbai after a prolonged illness. He was discharged two days ago from the hospital, but he had been in and out of ICU for the last over a month. Khanna is survived by separated actor wife Dimple Kapadia and two daughters Twinkle and Rinke. At least the veteran actor heaved a sigh of relief that Dimple was at his side as he breathed his last and during the last few weeks. Actress turned housewife daughter Twinkle along with her hubby actor Akshay Kumar and their son also provided good relief with their company.
Born in Amritsar on 29th December 1942 as Jatin Khanna, he later took on the screen name Rajesh. This man charmed tens of millions with his style and panache. Particularly through the 60's and 70's, India saw the emergence of a superstar phenomenon led by Rajesh Khanna who went on to bag the maximum number of Best actor awards. No other actor of his time won the prestigious Filmfare Best Actor Award thrice and got nominated 14 times. Rajesh played the lead in 180 films in 40 years from 1966-2011. At one time, Rajesh Khanna became the envy of every actor and handsome man in India as thousands of pretty women were known to even run away from home to get to see him in the tinsel town of Mumbai.
Khanna was adopted and raised by his close relatives. Rajesh along with his friend, another veteran actor Jeetendra aka Ravi Kapoor, won many prizes in college drama competitions and later in films. Rajesh Khanna continued his friendship for seven years with the then fashion designer and actress Anju Mahendru, and broke up to marry Dimple Kapadia in March 1973. Dimple shot to fame within six months with her debut film 'Bobby'. After giving birth two pretty girls, Rajesh and Dimple separated in 1984 but never divorced formally.
Rajesh Khanna, fondly called Kaka, earned fame as a romantic lover on screen with a mesmerizing aura and enchanting style. He created hits after hits in the 60's and 70's. He delivered 15 consecutive solo super hit films between 1969 and 1972, including 'Aradhana', 'Haathi Mere Saathi', 'Anand' and 'Amar Prem'. Recently, the veteran expressed his wish to recreate 'Aradhana'. Khanna also served as a Congress party Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha 1992-1996. He always campaigned massively for the Congress Party.
The news of Khanna's death drew thousands to the streets in Mumbai. India cine goers, known for their addiction to Bollywood, were deeply saddened, some even crying profusely to mourn the star that dominated their lives for a long time. Rajesh Khanna was synonymous with romance and love. His fans and bigwigs from the industry and political circles started arriving at his residence to pay their tributes. The cremation will take place in Mumbai July 19th, 2012. But, this Emperor of Romance will live forever on the silver screen and in the hearts of Bollywood fans.
